Environmental Responsibility,
Valuing Biodiversity

Operating in an industry that depends on natural resources, Vale Indonesia fully understands that its operations will lead to changes in environmental conditions such as the landscape, soil and water, and air quality.

Therefore, environmental management is integrated into all stages of the company's operational activities; from the exploration stage to the mining, processing and mine closure stages. This means we always calculate all impacts for our environment, and then strive to restore and preserve it.

A commitment in protecting the environment is fundamental to Vale Indonesia's business strategy. The pursuit of balancing socio-economic regional developments and maintaining the quality of natural resources, biodiversity and life lie at the heart of our actions. Moreover, Vale Indonesia's Contract of Work (CoW) area has a distinction in regards with biodiversity as within the Wallacea region.

That is why we recognize the importance of biodiversity and consider it as a fundamental idea for the business. Vale Indonesia plans actions to manage biodiversity in the regions where it operates, bringing together species and ecosystem conservation with operational activities.

The study was conducted in collaboration with the Indonesian Institute of Sciences (LIPI) and non-profit institution Citra Alam Towuti. The results found several species of animals that are on the red list of the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN).

We also conserve a Sulawesi-endemic animal species. We have been raising 11 deers at breeding facilities center and have received two additional Bubalus from the Natural Resources Conservation Agency (BKSDA). Besides, we also have completed the survey and design details of conservation areas with the facility construction plan.

Our commitment in environmental responsibility is stipulated in the Health Safety Energy (HSE) policy document. Furthermore, the implementation of Vale's Environmental Management System (EMS) based on the requirements of the ISO 14001 standard had begun. The EMS policy is used as a guideline toward completing Vale Indonesia's Sustainable Environment Development Policy. We continue to invest initiatives, such as improved land rehabilitation after the closure of a mine, waste management and air pollution control.

In the energy sector, Vale Indonesia has completed construction of its third hydroelectric power plant in Karebbe, South Sulawesi. This is not only an efficient measure for Vale Indonesia, but also an optimizing use of renewable energy in all operations that allows the company to participate in an effort of reducing greenhouse gas emissions. The operation of Karebbe hydropower plant is expected to prevent the emission of at least 90,000 tons of CO2.
