    A geologist from Canada-based Inco Limited, Flat Elves, was invited by a Dutch exploration company to study the nickel laterite formation in Sulawesi. He then visited Sorowako.

  • The birth of PT Inco
    PT International Nickel Indonesia (PT Inco or PTI) was officially established as a subsidiary company of Inco Limited.

  • First Contract of Work (CoW)

    PT Inco signed the 1st Contract of Work (CoW) with the Government of Indonesia that granted us mining rights in the provinces of South, Southeast and Central Sulawesi for 30 years, effective from its first commercial production (April 1, 1978 - to March 31, 2008). Exploration and feasibility studies commence.

  • First samples shipped to Ontario

    A shipment of 50 tons of iron ore samples were sent to Inco's research facilities at Port Colborne, Ontario.

  • Construction starts and accomplished five years later

    Some 10,000 Indonesians along with around 1,000 overseas workers constructed the Sorowako's mining facilities, processing plant, roads, town, port, airport, and the required infrastructures

  • Inauguration of Sorowako facilities and plant

    Then President Soeharto visited Sorowako in South Sulawesi to officially inaugurate our mining facilities and nickel processing plant.

    After 10 years of hard works, our Sorowako plant recorded its first commercial production.

  • 165-MW Larona in operation

    Then Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources, Subroto, inaugurated the 165-megawatt Larona hydro power plant – out first power plant.

  • Profitable Company
    Due to low nickel prices at the time the company suffered losses until mid 1980s. In 1987, became a profitable company.

  • Go Public
    Inco Limited sold its 20% stake at PTI to the Indonesian public through the Indonesia Stock exchanges.

  • From 80 to 100 million pounds

    PTI boost up its annual nickel production from 80 million pounds to 100 million pounds.

  • First Extension of CoW
    PTI signed its first modification and extension of its CoW with the Government of Indonesia that granted us mining rights until 2025 at the three provinces.

  • 110-MW Balambano in operation

    PTI officially operated its 2nd hydro power plant, Balambano, with a capacity of 110 megawatt.

  • From 100 to 130.5 million pounds
    As part of its plan to further raise annual production capacity to 150 million pounds, PTI proudly declared its 30% increase of production to 130.5 million tons a year.

  • Padma Community Development Award

    Then President Megawati Soekarnoputri presented the prestigious Padma Community Development Award to PTI along with 20 other energy and mineral resources companies for their significant contribution to the local communities.

  • From PTI to PT Vale Indonesia Tbk
    The general meeting of shareholders (RUPSLB) approved the name change of the company from PTI to PT Vale Indonesia Tbk., as a result of the 2006 acquisition of a 60.8 percent of stake in the Inco Limited of Canada by Companhia Vale do Rio Doce (CVRD) of Brazil.
